Discord age verification is now live for everyone. The chat platform began rolling out its retooled, "privacy-preserving" age-check system to all users worldwide on Wednesday, September 23, and it says more than 90% of accounts will be sorted automatically — no ID scan, no selfie, no action needed. Every Filipino account is covered by the rollout, whether or not any local regulator asked for it.
How Discord decides your age group
Instead of demanding documents up front, Discord uses a machine-learning model to classify each account as Adult, Teen, or Unconfirmed. The model reads account signals such as how long the account has existed, device data, the servers it joins, and general activity patterns. Discord says it does not analyze messages or calls to estimate age, and an account's age group is not shown on its profile or shared with other members.
"Age assurance draws strong opinions and skepticism, especially when it involves sharing biometric information or a form of ID," Discord chief technology officer Stanislav Vishnevskiy said of the redesign.
If you're flagged, you have options beyond an ID scan
Users the system cannot confidently classify as adults can verify without handing over government documents. Accounts classified as Teen get a locked-down experience by default:
- Blocked from age-restricted servers and channels, including sensitive images
- Message requests from non-friends are routed to a separate request inbox
- Alerts appear before accepting a friend request from someone with no mutual connections
- Full profile details are visible only to friends and members of smaller servers
The backlash that reshaped the system
Discord first tried to launch age verification in early 2026 and pulled back in February after users pushed hard against biometric scans and ID uploads. The privacy worry was not abstract: in October 2025, a breach at a third-party verification vendor exposed ID photos and selfies tied to roughly 70,000 users.
