Tokyo Game Show 2026 opened its doors at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan on September 17 with the biggest exhibitor roster in the event's 30-year history — and, for the first time, more overseas companies than Japanese ones on the floor.
The Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association (CESA) opened the show at 10:00 AM under the theme "The Longest Five Days of Nonstop Play," a nod to its longest-ever run: the show goes through Monday, September 21, a national holiday in Japan, as reported by GadgetPilipinas.
The numbers at a glance
| Figure | TGS 2026 |
|---|
| Total exhibitors | 1,138 (a record) |
| Japanese exhibitors | 540 |
| Overseas exhibitors | 598 |
| Countries and regions | 53 |
| Total booths | 3,999 across Halls 1–11 |
| Expected visitors | around 300,000 |
This is the first time in TGS history that overseas exhibitors have outnumbered Japanese ones. "For the first time in TGS history, the number of overseas participating companies has overtaken Japanese companies," Nikkei BP president and CEO Tetsuya Iguchi said at the opening, as quoted by Inven Global. CESA chairman Haruhiro Tsujimoto framed the stakes plainly: Japan's gaming industry, he said, is "one of the flagship content industries capable of competing globally," with the government treating it as an important pillar. Exhibitors come from 15 Asia-Pacific territories, the Philippines among them.
What's on the floor
The single largest block is the Indie Game Area with 292 exhibitors, including 78 titles in the SELECTED INDIE 80 program — an initiative that gives chosen indie developers free booth space, hardware, and on-site interpretation support, per the show's official indie program page. The same indie track also runs the SELECTED INDIE 80 Excellence Awards and the Sense of Wonder Night presentation event for experimental games. The General Exhibition area follows at 284 booths, with a 251-booth business meeting area and 134 business-solutions companies behind it.
Two smaller zones say a lot about where the industry is heading: an AI Technology pavilion with 14 exhibitors, and dedicated areas for gaming hardware (53 booths) and competitive esports (10 arenas). Age-restricted CERO Z (18+) game demos require a valid ID at the booth.
For its 30th anniversary, the show is running a commemorative exhibition in Hall 5 tracing gaming history back to the first TGS in 1996, and selling limited-edition pure gold (K24) anniversary medals engraved with attendee names.
Schedule: business days first, public days on the weekend
- September 17–18 — business days, for industry and press
- September 19–21 — public days, open to general attendees
Organizers are using real-time entrance sensors to monitor foot traffic across Halls 1 through 11 — capacity management for a crowd projected at around 300,000 over the five days.
Why Filipino gamers should care
There is no Philippine government pavilion on record this year, but the country is represented among the 15 participating Asia-Pacific territories, and the show's business days are exactly where Southeast Asian studios and publishers court partners. More practically for players at home: TGS is traditionally where Japanese publishers stage announcements, trailers, and demo reveals for the titles Filipino gamers actually buy — expect a heavy news cycle from Makuhari Messe through the weekend as publishers roll out their stage programs. The public days run September 19 to 21, so the biggest consumer-facing reveals tend to land from Friday onward.
