The Huawei Mate XT 2 is almost here, and its Chinese pre-order listings have already given away most of the reveal. Ahead of the official launch event on September 7, pre-orders now live on Huawei's official store in China have confirmed the tri-fold phone's colors and storage options, GSMArena reported on August 31.
Colors and storage: up to 2TB, plus a stylus
The listings show three finishes and four configurations:
- Colors: Dark Black, Pure White, and Jin Purple (names translated from Chinese)
- 16GB RAM + 512GB storage
- 16GB RAM + 1TB storage
- 16GB RAM + 1TB with a privacy matte display — a factory anti-peeking screen finish
- 16GB RAM + 2TB, bundled with an active stylus — the top of the range
Every configuration carries 16GB of RAM, and the 2TB ceiling is unusually high for any phone, foldable or not. Official pricing has not been announced; Huawei is saving that, along with the full spec sheet, for the September 7 keynote.
A redesigned tri-fold
The product imagery points to meaningful design changes. The Mate XT 2 uses an inward-folding tri-fold mechanism paired with a separate external cover screen — a departure from the original Mate XT, whose outward-folding display stayed exposed even when closed. Folding inward puts the large flexible panel on the inside, which should make the phone less vulnerable to everyday scratches and drops. On the back sits a new octagonal camera module, and product imagery also shows a textured leather backplate option.
The privacy matte display variant is worth a note of its own: it applies an anti-peeking matte finish to the tri-fold OLED at the factory, aimed at buyers who use a tablet-sized screen in public — exactly the situation a fully unfolded tri-fold creates on a commute or in a café.
The internals are still officially under wraps. Reports point to Huawei's Kirin 9050 Pro chipset, a battery of around 6,000mAh, and a camera system similar to the Mate X7's — but treat those as unconfirmed until Huawei says so on September 7.
Why the Mate XT 2 matters for the Philippines
Huawei has form here: the original Mate XT Ultimate Design actually reached the Philippines. It went on sale locally on March 7, 2025, priced at ₱199,999 for the 16GB + 1TB model, with launch freebies that included a FreeClip earbud set and a year of accidental screen damage protection, according to PinoyTechnoGuide. That made it one of the most expensive phones ever sold in the country — and it still found buyers.
No Philippine launch has been announced for the Mate XT 2 yet, and nothing about local pricing or timing is confirmed. But the first-generation playbook — China first, select global markets months later, including an official PH release — is the pattern to watch after September 7. The local foldable market it would enter has grown more competitive in the meantime, with devices like the HONOR Magic V6 launching in the Philippines in August.
What to expect on September 7
Huawei's keynote should confirm the processor, battery, cameras, displays, and — most importantly — prices for each of the four configurations, including whether the privacy-display and stylus bundles stay exclusive to China. If the original Mate XT's trajectory repeats, a global variant announcement would follow later, and only then would a Philippine price enter the picture. For now, the safe summary is: the hardware looks like a substantial second-generation rework, and the storage ceiling just moved to 2TB. Everything above comes from retail listings rather than an official spec sheet, which is exactly why the keynote still matters.
