The short version: from September 1, a tourist from any of Alipay+'s partner e-wallets can walk up to a Filipino store, scan the same QR Ph code local customers use, and pay — no new hardware, no separate sticker, and no sign-up on the merchant's side.
Philippine Payments Management Inc. (PPMI), the industry body that runs the national QR standard, switched on the cross-border link with Ant International's Alipay+, Newsbytes.PH reported. Around 2.5 million Filipino merchants and small businesses that already display a QR Ph code are covered from day one.
How a foreign tourist pays at a QR Ph counter
- The visitor opens the e-wallet or banking app they already use at home, as long as it is one of Alipay+'s partner services.
- They scan the merchant's existing QR Ph code — the same code used for GCash, Maya, or bank-app payments.
- The payment runs through their home app, and the merchant receives the money over the same QR Ph rails used for domestic transactions.
The integration covers inbound payments — foreign visitors spending in the Philippines — according to TechNode Global's report on the launch, which notes micro, small, and medium enterprises are the merchants expected to benefit most.
The scale on both sides
Alipay+ says QR Ph is now one of more than 10 national payment schemes it connects across Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. Its network reaches over 2 billion consumer accounts through more than 50 mobile payment providers operating in 220-plus markets.
The Philippine side has scale of its own. According to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas' (BSP) 2025 E-Payments Measurement Report, digital payments reached 64.69% of retail transaction volume, and QR Ph transactions grew more than thirteenfold during the year. The BSP has been steadily building out these rails, most recently with Direct Debit PH and a higher InstaPay business limit.
"QR Ph has advanced a more connected digital payments ecosystem," PPMI General Manager Carmelita "Melit" Araneta said in the launch announcement. "Through our partnership with Alipay+, we extend that connectivity beyond borders." Danny Chung, General Manager of Alipay+ Growth Center, framed the other half of the deal: helping customers "pay with apps they already use, while helping merchants participate in a bigger marketplace."
What it means for the sari-sari store
The practical win is that tourist money can now land in the smallest businesses without any new setup. A market stall in Cebu or a food kiosk in Vigan that put up a QR Ph code for local customers is now, automatically, able to take payment from a visitor's home wallet. Merchants keep settling through the accounts they already have; the foreign leg happens on the customer's side of the transaction.
There are still details to watch. The launch materials do not spell out which of the 50-plus Alipay+ partner wallets are enabled at the start, what exchange rates or fees apply on the payer's side, or how refunds work across borders. Those mechanics will decide how smooth the experience actually is once tourist season picks up. But the structural change is real: the QR codes already taped to millions of Filipino counters just became international payment terminals.
