watchOS 27 cuts the SE 2, Series 6–8, and original Apple Watch Ultra, but the Series 9 remains compatible after Apple mistakenly left it off its official website list.
Apple's watchOS 27, announced at WWDC 2026 on June 8, makes one of the sharpest compatibility cuts in the platform's history. Last year's watchOS 26 supported around a dozen models going back to the Apple Watch Series 6; watchOS 27 narrows that to six.

The Apple Watch Series 9 caused significant confusion at launch. Apple's website initially listed only five compatible models, leaving the Series 9 out entirely. After watchOS 27 developer beta 1 shipped, Series 9 owners found the update installed and ran normally on their devices. Apple confirmed to 9to5Mac that the Series 9 is indeed supported and that the omission was a website error — the official compatibility page has since been corrected.
The primary driver for the compatibility cut is Apple Intelligence and Siri AI, which are the headline features of watchOS 27. Rather than offering a reduced version of the OS for older hardware, Apple has drawn a hard line at models capable of running on-device AI workloads.
watchOS 27 brings a dedicated Siri AI app, a dynamic home screen grid that surfaces five Siri-suggested app icons, a revised Smart Stack, and a unified Find My app that consolidates Find Devices, Find Items, and Find People. Workout Buddy gains offline capability and provides new AI-driven insights into pace, distance, and effort for indoor treadmill sessions. Custom Wallet passes now support QR codes and barcodes for memberships and loyalty cards.
All supported models require an iPhone 11 or later with iOS 27. Developer betas are available now. The public beta follows next month, with final release expected in fall 2026.
