What is cloud gaming, and what is Blacknut?
Cloud gaming means the game runs on a powerful server somewhere else, and your phone only receives a video stream of it — like watching a movie, except you control what happens. Because the heavy processing happens remotely, you do not need a gaming PC or console, and there are no large downloads or installations.
Blacknut is a France-based cloud gaming provider. Its Smart portal lists a catalog of over 1,000 console and PC games streamed on demand, with progress saved automatically in the cloud and support for up to five player profiles on one subscription, so one account can cover a household.

Smart was the main presenter at PGDX 2026, the three-day Philippine GameDev Expo held July 24 to 26 at the SMX Convention Center Manila, which gathered game developers, publishers, and creators alongside ordinary players. Throughout the expo, visitors at the Smart booth streamed console-grade titles on ordinary smartphones — the live demo of the same service now open to all subscribers. Lloyd R. Manaloto, Smart first vice president, said the partnership reflects the company's "commitment to making innovative gaming experiences more accessible to more Filipinos."
The Blacknut tie-up sits alongside Smart's Power All prepaid offers, which bundle open-access data usable for cloud gaming, mobile gaming, and streaming. It is also the latest in a run of service upgrades for the network's subscribers, following Smart's rollout of Apple Pay support for load and bill payments.
Will your connection keep up?
Cloud gaming lives or dies on network quality: the stream needs a stable, reasonably fast connection, and any lag between your tap and the server's response shows up in-game. Fast-paced titles are far more sensitive to this than casual ones. On a strong LTE or 5G signal — or home fiber with Wi-Fi — the experience should hold up, but players in areas with weak coverage should temper expectations, and streaming games for long sessions will consume meaningful data on capped plans.
The upside is real for players who cannot justify a ₱30,000-plus console or gaming PC: for the price of a weekly load product, the same blockbuster titles become playable on a mid-range phone. Whether the catalog keeps the games Filipinos actually want to play — and whether the streams stay smooth at peak hours on congested networks — will decide if this becomes a mainstream way to game here or stays a curiosity.
