Instagram Breaks the Single-Caption Limit for Carousels

Instagram has rolled out a new posting feature — Multiple Captions — that ends the long-standing single-caption constraint for carousel posts. Starting June 18, 2026, creators can attach a distinct caption to every photo or video in a carousel, with the text updating automatically as viewers swipe from slide to slide. The change addresses a structural limitation that has shaped how users structured multi-image posts for years.

What Was Missing Before

Since carousels were introduced, Instagram has supported just one caption for the entire post. In practice, this forced creators into workarounds: write a broad summary that didn't address individual slides, stack context for each image into a numbered list at the opening, or use on-image text overlays that added visual clutter and made posts harder to read on smaller screens.

For sequential tutorials, travel posts where each photo represents a different location, or product showcases where each slide highlights a distinct feature, a single universal caption was particularly inadequate.

How It Works

The new feature fits naturally into Instagram's existing posting flow. After selecting photos or videos for a carousel and arranging their order, creators tap the caption field on the final sharing screen. A "Multiple Captions" toggle appears; enabling it reveals separate caption fields for every slide in the set. Each caption can be written independently, and captions change in the viewer's feed as the user swipes.

The feature is opt-in — creators who prefer a single caption for the entire carousel can continue using Instagram exactly as before. Multiple Captions adds an optional layer of control without disrupting the default behavior.

Who Benefits Most

Instagram pitched the update as a tool for boosting storytelling, and the practical benefits are broad across content types:

  • Educators and how-to creators can label each step in a tutorial without cramming everything into a single opening caption.
  • Travel and lifestyle creators can name and describe each destination or moment in a photo series independently.
  • Brands and retailers can call out the specific feature, color, or variant shown on each product slide, turning carousels into more effective digital catalogues.
  • Event photographers can caption individual moments from a shoot, letting the images stand alone with their own context.

Rollout

The update is rolling out globally, with multiple sources confirming availability extending to markets including India. No phased regional rollout or account-type restriction has been indicated — the feature is heading to all Instagram users who create carousel posts.
