Google pushed Android 17 as a stable over-the-air update on June 16, 2026, with Pixel devices from the Pixel 6 series all the way through the Pixel 10 lineup receiving the release first. Other Android phones will follow later in 2026.
Key New Features
Bubble Multi-Tasking — The messaging-bubble feature that previously worked only in select apps now works with most applications, letting users run any app in a floating window on top of whatever they're doing. Foldable phones get a dedicated bubble bar along the edge for quick switching.
Screen Reactions — A new recording mode lets you capture your face via the front camera simultaneously with what's on screen, so content creators can record their own reactions without third-party tools.
Gaming Mode (Coming Months) — For foldable phones, a split-screen gaming layout places the gameplay view above and virtual controls below. Google says this arrives "in the coming months."
Security and Privacy — The update introduces a "Mark as Lost" option inside Find Hub that lets owners lock a device remotely using biometrics — useful because a thief who knows a PIN can no longer use that to circumvent a lock command. Additional changes include per-app temporary location access, selective contact sharing, and stricter PIN attempt limits with increasing wait times.
Parental Controls — Screen time limits are now built into the OS rather than requiring a third-party app, and the controls work across Pixel and non-Pixel Android phones.
Gemini AI Integration — Google says AI-powered task completion through Gemini is coming "this summer," along with Gemini Omni on compatible devices for creating and editing video.
